I’ve been following T.J. Quinn’s Cyborgs Reborn Series since
the beginning, and I have enjoyed reading
them all. Quinn’s latest book Jarcor Returns,
I think, is the best one yet. It kept me up late at night trying to finish the
story.
The story begins with
the prequel Captain Lucas Jarcor. Captain
Jarcor was seriously injured in combat that required the amputation of his
legs. He was willing to agree to anything so he wouldn’t lose his legs. Since
his own legs couldn’t be saved and his other injuries were serious, they told
him they could only make him whole again by turning him into a cyborg.
Although they could develop cyborgs from embryos, enhancing
them with nanocybots and cybernetic technology, it took too long to grow them
to adulthood. When Captain Jarcor was so badly injured, this gave them the perfect opportunity to turn an adult into a
cyborg, what they considered the perfect soldier.
Captain Jarcor was thrilled to have his new legs and new
ability until he learns that by letting them turn him into a cyborg had has
become a virtual slave to the government. The government classifies cyborgs as
machines without basic human rights even though they all began as human embryos
whether naturally or in vitro.
Captain Jarcor is outraged when he finds he has lost his
human rights, his military rank, and his right to own property. So, he decides
to find a way out by hacking into his cybernetics and disabling the
restrictions on his free will. He escapes several times and submits himself to
painful procedures until he figures it all out and escapes for good after he
tells the other cyborgs how to get free from the constraints put on them.
Then he meets Sabrina, and
they had a passionate affair. Sabrina fell in love with Lucas, but he thought
she would be better off without him even though he cared for her. He leaves
Earth and goes to live on Arcadia, where cyborgs live free.
Blurb:
“After four years living on Arcadia, Jarcor decided it was
time to go back to Earth to find Sabrina and try to convince her to come to
Arcadia with him. But the first thing he found out about her was that she had a
little girl. Sure, she had moved on and forgotten him, he didn’t insist on
seeing him when she avoided meeting him. But her daughter had other plans, and soon he was discovered she was his daughter
too. The passion between them flared as
if they had never been apart. Convincing her to go to Arcadia with him wasn’t
as hard as he thought it would be but convincing her to stay might not be as
easy. Given a second chance, he planned to use it to seduce her and convince
her she couldn’t live without him anymore. But unexpected events turned their
lives upside down, and only a miracle
would make them right again.”
This book works on all levels. It’s an interesting cyborg
science fiction story with some unexpected twists and turns. The romance is
solid as Sabrina first avoids him then forces beyond their control bring them
together. It delivers a satisfying conclusion and a plausible HEA.
If you haven’t read this book, at least take a look inside
online. The prequel is free, and Jarcor
Returns is available on Kindle Unlimited.
